Hired A Contractor Who Severely Messed Up The Job. Was Told “you’ve Paid, I’ve Got My Money, I Don’t Give A F. I’m Doing You A Favor If I Decide To Finish”
Located in Pennsylvania.
Hired a contractor to redo our bathroom last Sept. He was late every day, stayed weird hours, and never returned to complete the job despite being paid in full. We now have a bathroom with tepid water, a “brand new” damaged tub (he damaged it by storing his tools in the tub), very poorly installed drywall, and crumbling grout. Not to mention the holes in the wall tile grout, as well as the floor. Cracks from the top and borrow are working their way up to what looks like an inevitable collapse.
He damaged our bidet seat. Left piss in the toilet (which wasn’t being worked on), used my hand towels as his work towels, installed 0 insulation after ripping out the entire exterior wall, used the incorrect nails/screws, and did not install proper support beams in the walls when he ripped it open (per another contractor with 20 years experience).
We’ve gone through the AG, whom he has avoided like the plague due to his highly probable IRS issues of falsely reporting income (he talked way too much). The AG case is now closed and going to their audit team.
I know there’s nothing more I can expect from the AG, but now that the case is closed it’s time to turn to small claims/an attorney.
Is it best to use an attorney in this situation? And if so, what type of attorney would be best to contact?
Any other help/suggestions that can be provided to assist would be greatly appreciated. It’s the middle of winter and we can’t even take a hot shower. Does not make for a happy camper.
Also, have a plethora of damning texts. He stated in writing when he would be returning, what work he would be completing, etc. He then stated that he had his money and I’m F*d, unless I play nice. He didn’t like me asking when he was going to show up, and when he walked into my house, threw mud on the walls and left, I asked why (he was supposed to be sanding) and how the work was intended to proceed. Was told to F off. Husband tried talking to him, he mocked hubby for taking time off work to be there when the contractor confirmed the date/time 5x prior, yet surprise surprise, never showed up.
This is all recorded in text.
