Hit As A Pedestrian By Truck, Been A Year Of Pt And Finally Surgery, Wondering If I Should Get A Personal Injury Lawyer?

I'll try to make this short - Was hit by a truck in the Bay Area of CA while I was walking across the street a year ago this month. Wound up at ER with nothing broken, but did have PT for shoulder/rotator cuff injury following. Found out during PT my knee was messed up as well and after nearly 6 months of PT, I finally had to have surgery. I'm recovering post op and will continue PT for another 3 months. Doc also mentioned that I now have a fissure in my knee cartelidge and am fast tracked to arthritis. I'm assuming med bills will be in $100K territory. I have tracked most of my lost time as a Salaried employee. I haven't even calculated future hospital/ortho visits nor pain management when it comes time. I'm unsure what to do and did talk to a potential lawyer who I liked, but the ~33% for settling or 45% if sueing gave me pause. Just feels like I'd barely get bills covered.

Driver's insurance is AAA, they did agree their driver is at fault, and has been sending me claim notices to settle. They also keep asking to report in or the claim will close. They’ve also tried to get me to sign papers to get access to my medical bills but that doesn't feel right.

If it's worth knowing, I was a hiker and pretty active before this happened and that feels potentially robbed from me... like quality of thise experiences would be deteriorated. It's also put mental strain on myself and wife. Just now seeking a therapist. Unsure how to factor those kind of things in.

Would love some thoughts/advice/peace of mind in this scenario.
