Hospital Went Against My Grandmother’s Dnr

Card image cap

She was resuscitated last night and spent 12+ hours on life support after my mom and her sister’s ordered they take her off of it. The doctor’s and nurses claimed no one had a chance to find her paperwork in the moment and her nursing home “gave them no information.” Mind you, she had been in and out of this very hospital for the last few months, so they had all her charts. Before all this, she told a doctor AT that hospital that she didn’t want to be resuscitated, but they did it anyway and she suffered more for even longer because of their negligence and have been downplaying the gravity of their mistake.

Also, (most) the hospital’s staff just lacks any and all compassion. They’ve given my family nothing but attitude throughout this time and had refused to tell my mom anything over the phone when my grandma was first admitted last night, but had the audacity to call her back in the middle of the night asking where to send THE BILL. They’ve been awful and completely disrespectful. My grandma spent her final weeks going through opiate and antidepressant withdrawals because either her nursing home neglected to give her medication or there was no communication between the facility and her doctors. The last 15 hours were just the straw the broke the camel’s back.

Update: I just wanted to make something clear. I’m not shitting on all healthcare workers. They deserve immense credit for the work they do, but there were some awful humans involved in the care of my grandma during her last few months; at both the hospital and nursing home. So, yeah, I’m pissed and want justice. If not through the court of law, then the court of public opinion.

My family and I are in the process of getting to the bottom of things and trying to figure out how this happened, at what point things went wrong and essentially who the responsibility falls on.

Elderly abuse is more common than people think and is hardly ever discussed, but I know that if this happened to my grandma, there are countless others who’ve suffered just as much as she did or worse. I won’t stand for it.
