How Do I Evict My Roommate And Where Do I Start? (chicago)
Hello All,
My roommate has been causing a lot of trouble for me recently, and I feel really uncomfortable and miserable living with him. Here are my biggest issues and some preemptive clarification.
I am the sole tenant on the lease. He is listed as an authorized occupant.
He has not paid his part of the rent in over 8 months. His liability to do it is not on the lease though, but it was implied. I suspect this is the tricky part. (He kind of owes me 9000 in rent.....).
He says he has found an apartment and is moving out, but has not given me a concrete timeline or exact day of departure. The entire common room is just full of moving materials.
He has threatened to commit suicide and self harm in the apartment. This was a direct response against me standing up for myself in an argument. Police were called and did not confirm any signs of self harm.
The landlord knows the situation and is in full support of me, but their attorney told them not to get involved and that I should try to resolve this on my own.
I'm not a confrontational person, and my roommate has given me a lot of trauma. I get chills and anxiety from even hearing his voice outside my room. I'd much rather have the law handle this.
I absolutely refuse to give up this apartment. This is absolutely non-negotiable.
What kind of lawyer should I be looking for? What kind of case would this even be?
I've talked to two already for eviction and tenant rep and they said they're not willing to even touch my case. I feel really mistreated and taken advantage of by someone who I thought of as a good friend down on their luck.
Thank you all for reading this far.
