I Am Worried Boss Is Going To Fire Me As Soon As I Train The New Girl. Pregnant! Help!
Currently 24 weeks pregnant in nyc. I’m not eligible for fmla but I am eligible for pfl. My boss is not going to allow me to come back after my maternity leave. Am I eligible for unemployment?
I’m pregnant and I work for a small business where I am one of 3employees. I am the “head” of my “department” - no one knows how to do what I do, including my boss. I have been here 10 years and have acquired a vast amount of responsibility and know how. After I told my boss I was pregnant he went behind my back? And hired a girl to do my job without even assessing if she was qualified, less than a week after I told him I was pregnant. I still have not met her, but she starts Jan 6. He did not get a resume until after offering her the job and like others in the past, I’m assuming he hired her because she made a good first impression and is “cute”. He was likely a martini or two deep. To offer some perspective on the kind of ‘man’ my boss is, he has a folder on his computer of “applicants” from a previous hiring period that consists only of “headshots” of young attractive women in their early twenties. The women’s resumes are nowhere to be found. He refuses to hire a male, and he turns away qualified applicants because of their looks. Anyway, to put it mildly, my boss is a piece of shit. I have posted about him before.
He has decided it’s necessary to have the new hire onboard asap (4 month before I am due) but when I balked (job security!!!?!!) he eventually assured me I would keep my job until I took the pfl. I’ve been here 10 years, but have taken breaks in my full time employment to work part time and go back to school, etc.. when these people have quit (because they cannot tolerate his narcissistic personality), or he would get tired of them not being able to do their job (because they were never competent in the first place but he insisted on hiring them anyway), I’ve dropped everything to help him out.
Regretfully, the timing always worked for me where I needed the money more than I hated the work. I wish I had left him years and years ago.
Anyway, he promised me a raise once the new hire started and guaranteed employment until the pfl took hold. He’s also agreed to cover the deficit in my paycheck from pfl maxing out at around 1200/week
How do I ensure he doesn’t just let me go the minute this new girl gets the hang of things?
Do I have any recourse if he does fire me? What should I get in writing? Do I keep doing my job well? or do I start gatekeeping things?
