I Got Hit By A Semi On The Highway And My Father Is Telling Me Not To Get A Lawyer

I’m 20 and I live in Missouri. I recently got into a serious car accident on the highway. I was driving in the slow lane when a semi-truck in the middle lane suddenly merged into me. The impact caused my car to spin out into the fast lane, where I stalled and was hit by another vehicle. Thankfully, I’m alive, but I suffered a really bad concussion and am struggling to figure out what to do next.

At first, I was just working with insurance to sort everything out, but my stepmom mentioned a lawyer who had helped her family members with an accident back in 2016. I had never considered getting a lawyer, but it sounded like a good idea given how complicated this all is. My dad even gave me the lawyer’s phone number and encouraged me to reach out.

I spoke with the lawyer, and everything seemed fine until he suggested meeting in person to go over the case. That’s when my dad told him to cancel and said we should just let insurance handle it. I don’t understand why my dad suddenly doesn’t want me to have legal help when everything about this accident points to it not being my fault.

On top of all this, I recently found out that my dad lied about some things:

  1. He told me I had full coverage insurance, but it turns out I only have liability.

  2. He also claimed the car was in my name, but I just learned it’s still registered to him.

I can’t help but feel like something weird is going on here. My concussion is making it hard for me to think clearly, and I’m feeling overwhelmed and confused. Should I try to get a lawyer anyway? What’s the best way to handle this situation? I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
