I Got Scammed By A Child Asking If I Could Pay For A Bluebike Ride, It Might Cost Me Over 1,000$
3 days ago I was leaving a cvs and a boy (maybe 12 years old?) came up to me and asked if I could pay for a bluebike ride for him. I live near Boston, BlueBikes is like Citibikes, where you can pay for a single ride, day pass, or have a subscription. I was a little suspicious, so I asked how he got here with no ride home, he said he took the T, but the story was a little convoluted. I should've trusted my instincts, I am someone who always tries to help people when I get the chance, but this did feel off. He said he would make sure to dock the bike when he got to Fenway. I said "please dont make me regret this" (jokingly at the time) and payed for him to unlock a bike ($2.75). He looked well cared for and seemed street-smart. I've had moments when I was younger where I felt stranded so i empathized and in the short amount of time I had to decide I didn't fully think through the ways his story didn't really add up. My gut feeling got worse as I walked home and I called BlueBikes as soon as I could. It's my responsibility since I paid for the bike. A lost BlueBike costs 1,200 ( I have no idea why they cost so much ) and the non-electric ones do not have any ways to track them. I have the bike number because the company called me to tell me if it wasn't returned within 5 days I would have to pay for it and opened a file and sent me an email. I'm in the process of moving and finding a job as well as doing treatments since I am chronically ill and I'm so exhausted. Is there any way I wouldn't have to pay? Or could get the price down? I understand this situation is the consequence of my naïveté, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to seek advice. I honestly just want it all to be behind me. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
