I'm Losing My House 6 Years Into A 10 Year Contract. Do I Have Any Options?
I moved into my home in 2018 and signed a 10 year lease to own contract, which states I pay x amount for 10 years, then x amount to get the deed at that 10 year mark.
I'm going through a separation and recently found out my husband fell really behind on rent. I called my landlord to explain the situation and ask if I could catch up on the rent within the week.
She said she didn't know why I was trying so hard and I should just move on. I told her I'm over halfway through paying on the house, and I'd just like the chance to fix the situation. She replied that I broke my contract a long long time ago and she's been being nice and letting me rent there. She never reached out and said how or why we broke our contract or how the current contract would be changed. She said i could catch up on rent, but the contract would still be void and I'd only be renting for an undetermined amount of time.
She said there are a lot of city fines, which I was not notified of or allowed to pay. I inquired multiple times about how much the fines are and if I can try to pay them and fix the whole thing. She wouldn't give me the information, and told me to just move on. And if I leave willingly she won't issue an eviction notice, or sue me for back rent.
I found a number for the city to try and see if they will give me the information for the fines directly.
Do I have any options here if she accepts the rent I owe her and I continue to pay? Would I be just biding my time and renting or could I fight to have the contract honored still?
