I Witnessed A Judge Terrorize An Entire Courtroom
Yesterday I went to the courthouse to support my husband in a legal matter and left absolutely horrified by what I witnessed.
The judge himself walked in late to the courtroom and immediately started making a statement to the effect of, I was here until 9:00 PM last night doing paperwork because you attorneys are loading up my docket before launching into a verbal attack on a random attorney. He ended his tirade along the lines of things are going to move quickly so no funny business and he doesn't want a repeat of the night before.
Okay, that's fine. At that point I thought he was just rightfully irritated and overworked while trying to make sure things go smoothly that day. I could not have been more wrong.
The judge was a machine making his way through all the cases with an attorney then proceeded to berate, threaten and patronize everyone without. His disgust with having to interact with any kind of novice was on full display and the reactions of the court officers and attorneys suggested to me this was a common occurrence.
The single most appalling thing I witnessed was a woman who appeared to have a devastating medical condition. By the time she was called, it was very apparent the stress of the situation was exasperating her condition and left her struggling to speak. Her husband (and I assume caretaker) attempted to speak for her and was immediately attacked and threatened with jail. It was all so completely unnecessary and devoid of a single ounce of humanity.
I witnessed more people with positive case outcomes leave a courtroom lividly angry than I ever thought possible. It is my sincere opinion that this judge's misconduct goes beyond the hostile courtroom his own actions created. I truly believe he is actively engaging in discrimination.
Aside from filing a judicial misconduct complaint, is there anything more I can do legally to address this judge's behavior?
