Il Divorce Questions

Card image cap

My husband has filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. I live in IL and we've been married for 22 years and have a 17 year old daughter (well, two months short of 17) and a 20 year old son in college. He wants me to go to his lawyers' office and sign something and says I don't need an attorney because he's going to be fair. The thing is, he has been emotionally abusive (and I know I shouldn't have put up with it) and I'm 99% sure he's been cheating although I don't have proof (he didn't deny it but didn't acknowledge, either) and has been taking our daughter to his affair partner's house at least once a week since the summer.

I was a stay at home mom until our son was in 8th grade, then I worked as a substitute teacher for a couple of years and now as a teacher's aide for almost 4 years, so I don't make much money and I have almost no retirement savings. He said he's going to give me the house, but I have no idea how much we still owe on it (we've lived there for almost 23 years but we refinanced once or twice).

His lawyer said I need to come sign paperwork and then we'll have an automatic court date in 60 days (from when, I don't know). Do I need to have a lawyer before I sign anything? I'm very lost.
