Inherited Property Now Village Is Suing Me

Card image cap

My dad died December 2017.

I got all his stuff.

This is in lake county Illinois.

The property is mostly trees and wetland but he has a house and three pole barns on it that he rented out for storage plus he had some outdoor storage as well for contractors and trucks, boats, trailers and cars.

None of this is visible from the street.

He bought the property in the early 1990's.

Apparently it is zoned agriculture but taxes commercial. He has been for the agg stuff.

I just continued on doing what it was not knowing anything was wrong.

Now they are suing me because they say I am running a business and storage isn't aloud. Though 3 other properties on the exact same block all have outdoor storage that is very visible.

My lawyer just keeps bending over.

There is no way I can afford the taxes if I don't have the outdoor storage.

They are also "requiring" me so all sorts of upgrades to the buildings.

I have hours of questions like how can they charge me commercial taxes and not allow me to be commercial. It isn't like I just did this after my dad died. It was unincorporated until 2004 and there was storage prior to the annexation so shouldn't it be grandfathered in? And hundreds more.

So I just need a better lawyer? They claim storage isn't permitted but again 3 very visible properties on my same block have outdoor storage. Seems rather fishy to me

Any help or advice would be great, and ask your questions.

Thanks
