Is An Employer Legally Allowed To Make A Salary Employee Pay Them Back For The Days They Had To Take Off Due To A Medical Emergency?

A family member is a salaried physician in a clinic and underwent a routine, outpatient procedure they've had over a dozen times. Well the last time it caused major, sudden complications and had to have someone rush them to the ER where they had to stay for a couple days while they healed. They couldn't eat or hardly breathe due to this injury.
This was a few months back and I just found out that the owner of the clinic (another physician) made her pay them back for the two days she missed, wouldn't let her use any PTO either and they don't provide medical leave.

Is this legal?

TIA
