Is There A Benefit To Letting My Job Fire Me Vs Resigning After Robbery?

Hi!

So I am working part time for a game store in Chicago, IL. Have been with the company for a few years. A couple weeks ago we were having a string of robberies in our district. We work alone, at night, in a bad neighborhood of Chicago. I was alone and four guys came in, came behind the counter, grabbed my keys and robbed us. We are obviously not supposed to ever fight back, and I never thought in a million years I would, but instinctually I just did. I broke policy by doing so I am sure. I was injured but not seriously. The same guys came back a week later and robbed us again. I have not worked since.

I am meeting with my manager later for what I assume is me being fired.

In this situation, would it be better to resign? Or would there be any benefit to them firing me? I am not sure what, if any, legal action I could take towards the corporation for having us work alone with that much merchandise while robberies are happening. But I doubt there are any laws that would be on my side here.

In my 15 years of work history I have never been fired, part of me wants to resign because wit “looks better” but I am not sure if I am giving up anything by doing so.

I do not need the job, and am not worried about finding a new one. I have a full time job that pays better, this was my “fun job”. So I don’t think I would qualify for unemployment anyways since I am still employed elsewhere. Iirc that is the main thing with being fired vs quitting.

So yes, if anyone would just be able to let me know, would me resigning not allow me to pursue workers comp? Or have any other negative ramifications? Does it matter at all or am I just overthinking this?
