Is This A Legal Way To Compensate Me For Mandatory Training?

Hello. I am really confused by something that just happened to me with a recently accepted position. I’m looking for insight before potentially responding to my boss.
Relevant information to note: -Located in OH -Our location is brand new, opening in a few weeks -The training I’m about to mention was all specific to the company/job
My managers had all of the staff do mandatory at home training. This training took me overall about 12 hours. Long story short, managers told us our “pay” for this is a $50 gift card & sweatshirt both to the company we work for.
This is odd to me since the pay rate (even after taxes) would give be more than their “payment,” plus I could actually use it to assist in paying my bills.
Is this legal?
