Landlord Wants To Charge Us $800 For Roof Repairs

Card image cap

This is in Florida. We had an issue with hearing squirrels in the attic. Landlord sent a pest company, they found 8 “openings” in the roof. Now, pest control is our responsibility under the lease, but this can’t be the case in this situation, right?

The way I see it, is the house had structural issues in the roof, that’s why the squirrels got in. And the lease says that the roof is the landlord’s responsibility. So, I don’t think we should be paying for it.

The landlord said they will cover half of it, and we are responsible for the remaining half ($800). Is my logic wrong? I told them exactly this, and they are still demanding we pay $800.

They put it on our account balance on the portal, so I’m assuming if we don’t pay they could in theory start the eviction process. We never had any late rent payment by the way. Any advice appreciated.

Edit: the pest control company did the repairs of the roof
