Massachusetts Rental Agency Is Charging Me A $660 Cleaning Fee After Moving Out.
I finished a lease about 4 months ago and moved away but noticed I was given a cleaning charge on the tenant portal online. It’s an incredibly old building and it was plenty damaged but we definitely didn’t cause anything that wasn’t already there. We did leave some vodka bottles and some free/paid furniture for the next tenants but that’s about it.
They did specify that a cleaning charge would be added in the “moving out instructions” that came separately by email around 2 weeks before the end of the lease so it wasn’t/isnt technically in the lease either. It said something like “USE OF A PROFESSIONAL CLEANING SERVICE IS ENCOURAGED. MINIMUM CLEANING FEE OF $500 IS AUTOMATICALLY ADDED IF NOT CLEAN or whatever”
After some searching it says it’s not allowed in mass. Any help?
