Medical Assistance Program To Take Our Home
My husband and I began purchasing his mother's home through private sale in May 2023. She was disabled and unable to care for the property and had move one town away with a lifelong friend. Fast forward to Sept 25,2023,his mother passed away. She was 56 yrs old. She was also insured through the state of Kansas for medical care. Now the state is telling us that they are going to take our home to pay her medical expenses since she was over the age of 55. Even though we have already entered into a contract and had been making payment on the house, we were told that we would've had to have owned it 5 years prior to her passing for that to matter. And to recover our costs we are supposed to take it up with the estate. There is no estate other than this house and the lot it sits on and this house is all that we have. Is there anything we can do to prevent our home from being taken from us? We bought for $20,000 and that's just being generous because of who the owner was. This house isn't worth that amount by far. The state is wanting $330,000+ for her medical expenses. We are in Dickinson County, KS.
