Help us please...Thanks if you read this. This is just a summary there is so much more to tell....nightmare

Summary:

Full placental abruption, large amounts of blood (3 toilet bowls) 10am-2pm, we sat in hospital being monitored for 8-9 hours before an emergency c-section was started at 7:30 pm, wife almost died due to blood loss, wife and son required multiple blood transfusions, Nitric Oxide was given without consulting the specialist causing his brain bleed to be more severe along with his existing condition Vein Of Galen Malformation to worsen. Body temp fluctuations while in NICU 92F-99F randomly, and lies or lack of knowing what was happening...We went to a different state to get help from a specialist and we could have got better care at our local hospital....in her last pregnancy she spotted literally 1 drop of blood and our hospital was talking about an emergency c-section within an hour if the fetal monitor showed distress...we failed the fetal monitor movement test for 8 consecutive hours before they finally did a c-section, they pulled placental matter out of his lungs....

Last April we discovered that our son had a medical condition called Vein Of Galen Malformation we were 29 weeks pregnant at this time. We were told to consult with either Boston Children's Hospital or Mount Sinai in New York. We chose Boston and agreed to be part of a clinical trial for in-utero brain surgery. in mid May we had the brain surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and everything went ok, his heart workload was reduced by 50% and the surgeon/neurologist/specialist we were there to see called bragging about how well our son was doing, outside of minor brain bleed caused by the needle penetrating the skull and the duration of the surgery 8+ hours, we were told it would be 2-4 at the most.

A couple days later my wife was in the kitchen and thought her water broke, we called 911 and an Ambulance came to get us and took us to the hospital.

Things of note: She has had 4 kids this was the first time her water ever broke so she didn't know what it felt or looked like We knew during ambulance ride that it was wayyyy too much blood, she filled up 2 toilet bowls with blood right after the water broke, and I got an overnight baby diaper that she put in her panties to help slow the flow, she bled thru the overnight diaper, and bled through 2-3 wrags during ambulance ride. The ambulance person treating her seemed very concerned about the blood and kept checking the wrags but also was telling us it's ok (We could tell he was extremely concerned).

10:45a (not 100% on time)

Brigham Women's Hospital Boston, MA

When we got to the hospital the ambulance guys got us checked in but the hospital staff made my wife walk to her room and bed (They thought it wasn't an emergent situation?).

They monitored us and put her on the Fetal monitor checking for heartrate and movement (we failed every single time) his heartrate never went up with movement.

They started her on Pitocin sometime betwee arrival and 12pm to induce labor....

They mentioned around 12-1:30ish the possibly of a c-section and my wife told them to please do absolutely whatever whenever to help our son.

While at the hospital she filled up another toilet with blood but before flushing I told her to show the nurse or doctor, the nurse came in and said oh that can be normal (we told her about the bleeding before), I believe she said it could be a hemmoroid rupturing due to water break? but showed no concern and told us its normal.

Doctor came in to examine and check Cervix, she said it was open but when she pulled her glove out it was absolutely covered in blood, wife asked is this normal she said "yes"

We continued to ask questions and spoke to the NICU team about after birth care.

Around 3pm she received an epidural for delivery (we spoke to the doctor John at this time his shift was ending)

sometime around 6:30pm they came and spoke to us about emergency C-section to which again we let them know to please do it now if it needs to be done we are totally ok we just want him to get help.

7:30pm they come in and abruptly take her away to do an emergency C-section

They cut almost a J in her belly because they were rushing so much...we heard the term "Full Placental Abruption" during surgery (I was in the room)

My wife came moments from passing out or death due to blood loss her and my son required multiple transfusions with iron to become stable. wife was lightheaded for a couple hours after and later told me she was 99% sure she was going to die during surgery....I wasn't aware of this

My son came out and they immediately took him to NICU, he was intubated(very common for Vein Of Galen babies and expected for our situation), but he was also placed on Nitric Oxide.

He was as stable as a NICU baby could be accoridng to all nurses.

They called the specialist at Boston Children's Hospital who advised them to transport him to BCH (These hospitals are separate but connected by a bridge, Brigham delivers mom and BCH can do better with the babies.

Once he was transferred to BCH they said he is ok stable but breathing too fast so that is why they intubated him to help him slow his breathing, heartrate and bp were good.

Next day he had an MRI scheduled at 4 or 5am, this was delayed to 3pm due to Boston Children's not having a nurse on staff who could transport the Nitric Oxide tank.

9am Doctor/specialist comes to the meeting they have outside of son's NICU room, has no idea about placental abription until wife tells him, he finds out they delayed the MRI and the reason "Nitric Oxide" he immediately gets pissed and asks why is he on that? then explains why you do not put VOGM babies on Nitric Oxide, tells them to get him off of it immediately, then calls and gets the MRI rescheduled to 11am.

80% Oxygen, heartrate 130s

His temperature was allowed to fluctuate wildly I have a picture where it was 92.3 degrees Fahrenheit then later 99, then back down....They told me he was messing with his sensors? (I didn't realize the temperature difference was that bad until after the fact due to the temp on the machine's being in Celsius)

I repeatedly ask the nurses and the doctor how he is doing and they all say he is doing good he is pretty normal compared to other NICU babies. Doctor shows no major concerns but lets me know my son will need another embolization soon, also this was discussed beforehand as a possibility.

The next day I wakeup and son's heart rate is higher, blood pressure lower, and his feet are cold. I ask the nurse what is going on she said oh he is fine we had to adjust his medicine because his BP dropped. I was very concerned due to high heart rate and low BP she said its normal they have to adjust the medicine to get it balanced, she also said he is doing good breathing his Oxygen is 40%? (why lower it?), I asked why his feet were blue and cold she said "That is from birth sometimes there skin will turn blueish" but it wasn't there prior to today.

They have a shift change we get a new nurse around 6 or 7am and I ask the same questions and get the same answers, doctor comes in around 9 and has no concerns talks to wife. around 10am nurse tells us to back away from son. we hear machine's beeping, at first she does some things, then gets someone else in there, then another before we know it machines sounds horrifying and there is 20 people in the room, then 30 then room is so full we can't see any floor at all.

A doctor Dr.Phil comes to us who works with our specialist and tells us it is ok our son is crashing but he is ok they have it under control they are dealing with it, they keep saying increasing fentanayl that is the only thing I remember hearing and machines. Dr.Phil makes my wife get up out of wheel chair to look at son and shows her "see he is ok" but he didn't look ok and everyone looked panicked and they were in a frenzy......This went on for 20 minutes or so then they said they need to transfer him to the cardiac floor where he can get better help, they make us stay. all 30+ people leave the room and it is just me and my wife with some social worker trying to calm us down. They finally ask us to come down to the cardiac floor and tell us he isn't going to make it we need to go say our goodbyes....

within 30 minutes they ask us about funeral arrangements, and where we are having the funeral just horrible stuff literally minutes after we lost our baby boy. we are mad but it has been almost 8 months we aren't looking to blame anyone we just truly feel we didn't get the treatment we and especially our son deserved.

if you read this thank you for taking the time...
