Missing Will

My boyfriend’s grandfather passed last year. They were very close and worked together as electricians. His grandfather had lots of properties and money saved up. Definitely had a few million. His grandfather was married and when he passed my boyfriend’s dad asked about the will, the wife said she didn’t know where it was. She said also didn’t know the code to his safe. They found out the widow went to probate court and eventually they were able to get in the safe but it was empty. This man loved his family and definitely would have left something for his son’s family. Is there anything that can be done about this? My bf’s dad now has cancer and treatment is so costly and I can’t help but think it’d make it easier on them if there was money his grandfather left for his son and grandchildren.
