Mother In Law Accused Of Shoplifting While On Tourist Visa

Hope this is the right place for this. Looking for advice as this just occurred.

My wife is a green card holder and her 67 year old mother is visiting on a 10 year tourist visa. They were shopping in Costco yesterday and, after paying for groceries, were stopped by I’m assuming lost prevention. They found a $20-$30 article of clothing in the baby stroller of my daughter that wasn’t paid for. Wife had no idea it was there and her mother claims she forgot she put it in there and meant to buy it. Wife offered to pay double for clothes but tempers got heated when the man started accusing them of stealing other things such as my wife’s coat with no proof. Police were called and her mother was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.

Whether her mother actually took the item or simply forgot I am unsure. They have been known to use the stroller as a shopping cart at other stores so I think it was an honest mistake.

My question is, how likely would this affect her mother’s tourist visa? And any advice to take moving forward. This occurred in Virginia by the way. Much appreciated.
