Moved States For A Live-in Nanny Job That Was Terminated In 3 Days—should I Pursue Legal Action?

Hi everyone,

I could really use some advice regarding an unfortunate situation I’m currently dealing with. A few weeks ago, I was offered a live-in nanny position with a family who seemed genuinely welcoming and professional. The position was presented as permanent, with a salary of $1,650 per week, and they encouraged me to move from Louisiana to Utah to take the role. Based on this, I packed up my entire life, incurred over $1,000 in relocation expenses, and drove across the country.

After only three days of working with them, the wife sent me a text abruptly terminating the position, saying they no longer needed my help and asking me to leave. I had no prior indication this would happen and no mention of this being a “trial period.” I’m now left traveling back to my home state, jobless, in debt, and without a place to stay.

When I asked for compensation, they offered me $420, which barely covers my gas and travel expenses back home. I feel this doesn’t begin to address the financial and emotional toll this has taken on me.

Here’s what I’d like advice on:

• Is it worth pursuing legal action for relocation costs and damages? • Would this fall under breach of implied contract, promissory estoppel, or some kind of misrepresentation? • What legal options might I have given there was no formal written contract but clear verbal communication and text evidence about the nature of the job?

For context: I have saved all text messages and communication where they confirmed the position, salary, and encouraged me to relocate. I’ve also documented my expenses and the timeline of events.

I’m not looking to drag this out unnecessarily, but I feel wronged and want to know if pursuing this legally is even feasible. Any advice, experiences, or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.
