My Apartment Is Requiring Me To Move Out, But Not Covering Any Of The Cost

My apartment received water damage due to a busted pipe that flooded the apartment above mine. My apartment was affected as water leaked into it from the ceiling.

This led to them having to re-do the walls and floor in my apartment. They told me I will have to move my furniture and the apartment needs to be vacant for this process. So I needed to be moved out completely asap.

They have another apartment in the building I can move into temporarily then I will be required to move back after 4 weeks. They will not cover movers, this will cost me up to $1000 as I have furniture that has to be disassembled then reassembled as well as Internet in installed and re installed. I will have to pay everything out of pocket. I’ve filed a claim with my renters insurance but they won’t cover much.

I pleaded with them to allow me to move just once into one of their vacant units, to help me save money. They only agreed to permanently move me into a vacant unit that’s $150 more than what I pay now, for the same size, but apparently has a “nicer view”. I asked if they could consider how much money I’m already losing over paying to move, especially when this is something caused by another tenant. Yet they argue that this wasn’t their fault so they don’t have to negotiate with me.

It’s been really frustrating, especially with this falling on me during the holidays. Has anyone else experienced this? Did your apartment ever help you through it?
