My Cat Died Due To Someone Else’s Negligence

So my wife and I became homeless with no where to go so I tried to find someone who could foster them for a few months while we get back on our feet. My dad allowed us to stay with him but couldn’t bring our cats with us because he already has animals here. A lady reached out to me and said she could do it and I told her we would give her money for food and litter. Come to find out she was not taking care of them and one of my cats passed away because she was starved and had no water and the other two babies were very skinny. Every time I would try to reach out she would ignore my messages and calls and I asked her if they had food and she would tell me yes. She said I could come over whenever I wanted but when I would message her she wouldn’t respond. I did show up unannounced a few times because she said she would leave the door unlocked for us to come by anytime and the door was always locked. Come to find out as well her house is like a horde house and absolutely disgusting and she has other animals in there too. I made a police report against her and the police told me she has other charges with other people too and she even works for the state of Michigan as a social worker! She said she is going to sue me for false allegations and false police report! Can she do that?!? They were under her care and she agreed to do so. Will I be the one in trouble here??
