My Employer Made Me Come Into Work On A Day I Called Out Due To A Family Emergency.
I’m in North Carolina. My 2 year old son was in the hospital this week for RSV and pneumonia. I called out of work for the rest of the week and my boss said I would need a doctor’s note before returning Monday - which is fine. I got coverage for the other manager to take my on call shift. Last night 2 people didn’t show up to their shift and the other manager called me to brainstorm what to do. She then called our manager and said that the two of us would need to cover it because she was on PTO. So after almost 7 days of no sleep, I was told I had to come in to work a portion of the shift. I have a Drs note that says I should be out until Monday. What actions can I take? Should I take the note to HR and tell them what happened? Is there anything protecting employees from things like this happening? I plan on talking to the director above my boss as well because I feel I received no compassion while my son was in the hospital and I feel very unsupported. I am the newest member of the management team, but the other manager is feeling the same as I am and has had multiple conversations with the director.
