My Landlord Sucks At Clearing The Snow And It Is Making For A Very Dangerous Living Experience.
[NY State - City of Ithaca] I live on a large property of townhomes, and we all share a large parking lot. In our lease, it is stated that the landlord is responsible for all snow removal. We just got a snow storm that ended around 10AM on Saturday morning, but arguably 2AM (<2 inches of snowfall since then). It is now 24 hours later, and there has been absolutely zero effort made to clear the snow (about 1 foot) in the parking lot. It is about to be 5 degrees outside and all of the snow will surely freeze and become very difficult to clear, and poses a significant fall hazard.
This has been a major problem in the 6 or so years I've lived here. Whenever there is a major snow storm, there is no effort made to clear it, they just kind of wait until the next warm day in hopes it resolves itself. As the snow melts and freezes the parking lot (which is on a bit of a slant) becomes an ice rink. Whenever they do 'clear it' it is super half-ass (they leave about an inch of snow across the lot) which, again, becomes a thin layer of ice as the season progresses. Every time I express my concerns to them, they just say "sorry, we're having a hard time finding help to clear it." I've had it, and I honestly just want a reduction on my rent for the absolute headache this causes me every year. Our laundry room is across the lot, and walking across a slanted ice rink while carrying 30lbs of laundry is really sketchy (luckily I have not injured myself YET, but it's because I've mastered the art of walking on ice).
Can I do something about this? If so, who should I talk to? I know next to nothing about talking to lawyers. Thank you for the help in advance.
