My Mother Almost Died, Can We Sue The Landlord?
This happened in Maryland. Last year, there was a fire in the apartment unit next to the one my parents lived in. An article about the fire in the local news said there were no working smoke detectors in the building. If my dad hadn't decided to stay home that day, my disabled mom would have been dead. Even with him there to alert her of the fire and wake her up, a few days later she went into cardiac arrest for nearly 20 minutes, and had a stroke. It was confirmed to have been caused by the fire. One of their cats passed away from smoke inhalation a few days later, too. The building was condemned, and they lost just about everything they owned. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but my dad was always so healthy, and a few months later developed cancer. He passed away a bit over two months ago. My mom is living in poverty and can barely afford her rent. Is there anything that can be done? Thank you for any and all advice.
