My Mother Got A Collections Letter With Her Former Married Name On It Form A Company She Does Not Have An Account With. (tx)
Hello all. Throwing this to the Redditverse for help.
My mother (67F) just got a collection letter from an agency collecting on behalf of T-mobile. The letter is referring to her in an old married name she used over 20 years ago. That marriage did not last long. We think either one of the children of the man she divorced is using her name, or her old identity was stolen. Apparently, she got a similar letter last year using that old name so it has happened more than once. ast year, she also received a flip/burner phone- looked like something from the 90s, under that divorced name.
We have no intention of paying this, contacting that hideous family, or letting more of her identity get stolen. What can we do? I am worried if we go to the collections agency they will just update their information and make it look like the debt is current. I am also worried that my mom is at that age when people like using elderly identities to sign up for various programs and benefits. What do we do?
