My Wife Was Appointed To Be A Guardian For Her Grandmother Without Being Told She Was Responsible For Legal Fees

Hey there,

So as the title suggests, my wife was appointed a guardian without being told that she was responsible for the fees.

We are in Florida. Escambia county if that matters

A few months ago, she and her brother were contacted by a law firm regarding guardianship of their grandmother. Their grandmother is currently in an assisted living facility and cannot make decisions for herself. As far as we are aware she has no income but cannot be sure as we have had no access to her financial info.

They have already gone through the process to become guardians and have asked multiple times if there would be any legal fees they were responsible for. Each time they were told there would not be any fees they had to pay.

However they just received a letter from the law firm advising of fees they were responsible for including a monthly cost.

We cannot afford the amount. Period, full stop. The only reason she did this was to help her grandmother and because there wasn't supposed to be a financial burden on her.

So, at this point what are our options? Can she "cancel" being a guardian? Is there an avenue where she wouldn't be responsible for the costs?

I am probably missing something because I am a little stressed so please forgive me.
