Neighbor Is Claiming My Dog Bit Them When My Dad Took Them For A Walk
This past Sunday my dad took my dogs on a walk around noon. Nothing out of the ordinary. The following day, Monday, I get a call from the apartment complex leasing office. They told me that a neighbor made a complaint about my dog. They stated my dog bit them when my dad took them on their walk that Sunday morning/noon. My dad never told me any type of incident happened, so I questioned him about it to get the story. He claims they only barked at someone and he didn’t see any bite occur.
So I told the office to go ahead and give the neighbor my contact information and we can sort things out. I asked for pictures of the bite (which they’ve been evading and haven’t sent). I offered to pay for medical expenses should they incur any from the incident. Then that’s when things get a bit weird… they demanded cash up front. They said they didn’t wanna go to the hospital and get billed for it later since they’re “in between health insurance.” We’re in the U.S. where it’s literally mandated for you to have health insurance coverage of some sort unless you want to pay a penalty… so that comment to me was already a bit off… I said I can only help pay for medical expenses if I actually see a bill and proof of services provided. If it’s a bill they’re worried about I offered to go to the medical appointment with them and designate myself as the responsibility party so I get the bill instead. But they’re still demanding cash. They told me they were going to call and get an estimate of cost before going and then get back to me with the price…
I have renters insurance and allegedly the incident happened in the apartment complex so I believe it would cover if the dog bite actually did happen. So my other option is to offer them my renters insurance information so they can file a claim if said bite did occur.
This just all sounds so scammy though. I never had a situation like this occur before. What should I do?
