New York- Arrested While Driving A U-haul I Had Paid For (or Thought I Did.)

Okay, so. A then 'friend' rented a uhual with money i sent them over cash app. They were supposed to have rented it for a week with the possibility to extend it longer for a property I needed to clear out that was overflowing with contents that needed more time to be sorted, so the plan was to move it all to storage units. So they got the truck while I went and set up the storage unit. They bail a couple days in, say it's because their kids sick. I rope in a cousin to help finish the job. It ends up taking almost two weeks to clear out, so I have sent them extra money to cover extending the rental twice.
While I'm finishing up and taking the final truck load of stuff to the unit to unload with what i was under the impression, another night still paid, i planned on unloading it and returning it either that evening or the next morning. Then I get stopped by an officer. Told to exit the vehicle. I end up under arrest for possession of stolen property. I am charged with PL 165.45 05 CPSP 4 and PL 165.05 01 Unaut use veh-3. I showed them the contract the friend gave me from uhual, i showed them the three payments i sent on cashapp. I show them texts i have discussing the rental with the other person. The two officers went back and forth on what/if to charge me, end up saying "well they have the contract, i dont know, what's uhual want to do?" Then charged me. Apparently, the 'friend' only rented it for two days originally. Then proceeded to pocket the remaining amount and the payments i sent them. When uhual got on them and started threatening legal action, they got scared and told them I took the vehicle on day 1 without permission (i have texts proving otherwise, i still have the contract, and i have the payement screenshots.)
I understand the severity of the charges. I have no criminal history. Barely even any traffic tickets. I am trying to find an attorney to represent me, so I do intend to speak with one about this. In the meantime, I'm losing my mind trying to figure out how I even got charged with the proof I had and am trying to figure out what I can expect going through the court process and if I end up found guilty of the charges, what I can expect as a result.
