Old Apartments Keep Sending Me Fake Checks

Hey y’all, I live in San Mateo, CA with my family and we got kicked out from my old apartments last year due to a “pipe leak”. We were given a 30 day notice letter to leave right after we paid rent. They told me that they would refund my rent money and soon afterwards I received a check which my bank did not accept because it was a “false check”. I later call my apartment company “UDR” asking to talk to someone and had no luck on getting a hold of someone. I email and after a of couple months I get a response saying that they will send me a new check which also turned out to be a “false check”. I’m getting sick and tired of going to the bank after receiving a fake check. Can I do something about this?
