Parents Were Arrested On Domestic Violence Case, Not Sure How To Proceed.

Hi all, not sure if this is the right sub, but I'm very lost and not sure how to proceed.

I live in Los Angeles, California.

To sum it up, my parents got into a physical altercation yesterday and they were taken to jail. I received the call during work and needless to say, it left me at an absolute loss. My mother called the police on my father after he put his hands on her, but she also hit him. She was released because she has stage 1 cancer and she's currently in treatment, and they gave her a citation to go to court early next year. (There's a date and address on it.)

My father, however, was transferred to the county jail today and he has court tomorrow. I have two concerns:

  1. The citation my mother received says she needs to go to court next year. I spoke to a few cops, and I was left confused because one told her she needs to go to court tomorrow, just like my father, but after calling, I was told she needs to only go to court in the date on her citation.

  2. My mother did not think my father would go to jail, nor does she want him to. She wants him out of there. My father basically thinks his life is over and I have been unable to get any info from him through the phone when he called from jail - he was too distraught to make much sense.

After checking, they both have felony charges on the county jail/inmate site as this is a domestic violence case. My mother is not an English speaker, but I don't know how a situation like this is supposed to be handled, or how I am supposed to help them at all. I'm angry and disappointed that they did this while I was away, but at this point it's already happened.

Any advice would be appreciated.
