People Claiming To Be Ice Agents Want My Dl And Ssn

This happened in California.

I am a US citizen, born and raised in California. Yesterday when I was at the grocery parking lot 2 men approached me and identified themselves as ICE agents.

They questioned if I am a US citizen which I told them I am. They then asked for my driver license. After a bit of hesitation, I showed them my DL and they took a picture of it. Next they want my SSN so they can verify my citizenship status.

I did not want to give them my SSN. They threatened me and said they could detain and arrest me if I don’t show them. Eventually I gave them my SSN and they let me go.

1. Is it legal for ICE agents to randomly question people, asking for their DL and SSN?

2. How do I even know they are real ICE agents? Now that they have my DL and SSN. I am afraid they maybe fraudsters they scared me into give my identity information. Is there a website or phone number I can call to verify to see if these ICE agents are actually real?

3. Am I required to show them my DL and give them my SSN?
