Property Was Stolen From Dorm From Winter Break (private University In New York)
Hello, I was hoping that someone could help me with my issue. I currently go to a university in NY that forces me to dorm. For simplicity's sake, I chose a dorm with a 2 semester lease, so I wouldn't have to worry about my stuff in between semesters. I lived at this dorm for the fall semester, and I left to go home for break around 12/20. I then came back around 12/30 and everything was normal.
When I returned on 1/18 everything was gone. I was so confused what happened, but my roommate told me he saw cleaners come into my room and take all of my stuff around 1/7 while they were playing video games. When I asked them why didn't they stop the cleaners from stealing all my stuff, they didn't have answers (my roommates are scumbags). I then went to my RA to explain what happened and they said as students they can't do anything and that Steven needs to get help from an "adult."
I then emailed the dorm building manager, who didn't even apologize this happened. Instead of giving me any sympathy in these emails he tried to put all the blame on me. The university had sent out emails to write post-its saying "do not remove" and put it on your stuff. I had accidentally instead wrote notes saying "taken," and because of this the building manager implied it was my fault my stuff was taken. I don't understand this logic; I have a 1 year lease and that dorm room was my personal space. I shouldn't have had to write a post it note at all, and the cleaners should have at least asked before throwing away my stuff. No one tried to contact me through phone or email. The building manager was not sympathetic and just copied and pasted the post it policy (it was different text so was really obvious).
After realizing that the university was more focused on not accepting blame then actually helping me, I called campus security. The guy was pretty nice and honest and explained that there wasn't too much to do. He said that he could call the police to make a report but it probably wouldn't lead anywhere. I decided to make the report anyways. When the police came, my roommate who witnessed the event didn't even bother coming down to explain his account, because he was too busy washing dishes. The RAs, however, who before we're unable to help because they were not adults gave their account that it was my fault because I wrote "taken" and not "do not remove." The police ended up saying that this was an internal university problem and they cannot help.
I wanted to know what my options are. I'm a first generation college students and do not have the money to replace all my stuff. If I cannot get my items back, then the university must at least partial compensate me since they are at fault right? I also don't trust my roommates and don't want to spend another night at the dorm, but this dorm is already the most cheap option so any bed-for-bed will mean that I will have to pay more money. Also, at my school dorming is required. I would really appreciate any help because so far no one has been on my side in this situation.
Stuff taken: clothes, water bottle, a few hundreds in cash, suitcase, bed linens = about $1500-2000 total
