Question Regarding Motorcycle Accident

I (30m) was hit on my motorcycle by a guy who ran a red light. He totaled my bike and put me in the hospital with a traumatic brain injury, lower back injury, neck injury, numbness in my hands and more. it has been obviously deemed 100% his fault and im in talks with his insurance currently. my question is about retaining a lawyer. My family is telling me I shouldnt get a lawyer until they have made an offer on my bodily injury claim, and if its under a certain amount that would be the time to get a lawyer. are they right? would I get more money from hiring a lawyer? they are saying hiring a lawyer will get me less money because I will have to give a percentage to the lawyer. my family members are saying if he only has liability I will get $25k at most regardless of if I get a lawyer or not so it would be pointless in that case, can anyone give me some advice on this?
