Received Letter From An Attorney Regarding "payable On Death" For A Deceased Individual. Legit?

Hello all.
Not sure where to post this so figured i'd start here. A friend of mind received a letter from a law firm in Canada (which appears to be legit) regarding a client of hers that passed away and that this client left behind a Payable on Death savings account.
This client shares the same last name as my buddy, which is not a common name at all, but he's not aware of any relatives with this first name. Apparently the client has no next of kin and the lawyer states that my friend's relationship with the deceased client does not matter and the lawyer, as their attorney, is able to present the next of kin.
This seems suspicious to me but it is a legit law firm so wasn't sure if this is a known scam of some sort, or if anyone has ever heard of anything like this, OR, if any of this even makes sense (such as the attorney allowing to name next of kin for example).
For now, I have this out to my attorney but it's going to take some time for him to dig into this so I wanted to dive in myself.
Any info would be appreciated.
