Responsibility To Pay For Storm Damage And Upgrades For Deceased Relative’s House
My mother passed away in June. We had a complicated relationship as she left when I was in middle school (2001 ish) and I only had contact with her a few times per year after that.
She lived in a rental house that was owned by my grandmother for about the last 3-5 years. The home and all utilities were in my grandmothers name, and I’m not sure what the payment situation was between the two of them. My grandmother is landlord over around 15 commercial and residential properties in her hometown, and I believe she should be quite well informed about property law.
She called me this week and believes there is a life insurance policy that I am listed as beneficiary on. She asked that I get the life insurance money and reimburse her for storm damage from a hurricane that occurred in October, which was 4 months after my mother passed away and vacated the property. She also stated that she needs to do some updates before the property can be rented out again. She wants this done before the first of the year, which is in 2 weeks.
Do I have any legal liability to pay for storm damage and home updates out of a life insurance payout for a home that my mother was never the owner of?
