Retaliatory Lawsuit, Not Sure What I Should Do
It is a bit of a crazy story but I will try to keep it brief and as vague as possible to avoid the other party recognizing me but not sure if that is possible due to the required specificity here. So I (28F) moved into a bedroom in a shared unit with my landlord (50M) for ~1 month. I paid rent for 1.5 months with a month to month agreement although he never supplied any rental agreement. It became clear pretty quickly that he was not "right" and started moving towards propositioning me for a relationship which I declined. It came to a head when he attempted to sneak into my room at 2AM one night, then for 2 days yelled at and insulted me almost nonstop. The day after the break in attempt he took my dog out of my room to sit with him and his dog while he ate while I showered. As soon as I was dressed, a dog fight ensued where I was able to pull my dog out and he grabbed his, but it ended in him being bitten accidentally by his own dog as she attempted to bite mine. He, in this moment, claimed he couldn't see which dog bit him. The following day he continued the yelling and insults as well as threatened to take my dog to the humane society if I left him while I went to work, so I booked an AirBNB to get away. He started harassing me over email about my looks, my job, and now my dog. He says if I don't get in touch with him he will come after my dog. I end up being fired because of his calls and emails to my job. I get a TRO and finally he stops. About 4 months later around the time of our FRO court appearance he files a civil complaint against me for my dog biting him for $5000. It takes some months of adjournment but I am granted the FRO in December. Immediately after he amends his complaint to now sue me for $20,000. The complaint has grammatical errors, is sloppily written, and it does not appear he is working with an attorney. I want to be done with this man. I want to be left alone and this lawsuit feels like a continuation of harassment through the only legal channel he has left. What are my options here, I am still financially recovering from losing my job and having to move so much so paying a retainer isn't really an option at this time. Any advice or recs are greatly appreciated.
ETA It won't let me see the comment posted but to add; I did file charges for the attempted break in, he was arrested but due to many prosecutorial changes in the county I am not sure how his criminal proceedings went. I have everything very well documented so I am open to a countersuit, but am not confident in my ability to represent myself for that kind of case. I did the FRO hearing pro se; however, that felt much more straightforward and seeing him in person does make me incredibly anxious to the point that I shake and it is not conducive to competently presenting my case.
