Roomate Stole My Room In Shared Apartment.
I can’t even believe this happened
I was paying rent in NYC in my old apartment (4br) but living with my boyfriend in a different part of the city. While I don’t go to the old apartment often, I sometimes go there to grab some stuff, it was like an overpriced storage room I was attached to and was my home for a very long time that I didn’t want to give up yet. I paid the most amount of rent in that apartment, and most of the shared living items (kitchen, furniture etc were mine).
I have a roommate who wanted my room because she had too much stuff. I told her i don’t feel comfortable with it but I’ll think I about it. I didn’t ever respond to her as I had lots of other problems going on at the time and I decided I didn’t trust her or feel comfortable giving up the space. I didn’t hear from her so eventually assume she gave up and understand that I’m not getting rid of it and found some other solution.
Fast forward, I message the group I found a wonderful person to replace me and to move into the room after the holidays (two of the roommates have met her before and like her), but this one is giving me an annoying hard time and pushing back!
I stop my the apartment to start thinking about the transition and what to do what my stuff, this girl is there and won’t let me walk into my room. She’s surprised and horrified to see me and eventually tells me it’s because she took over my room. Without my permission, without me knowing, she took all of my things out of my actual bedroom — and put them in the room she was paying for.
She says I shouldn’t be upset, it was a “business transaction”. Which appears to be one sided as I never agreed. Other roommates think she talked to me and verified but that never happened. Not only have I continued to pay more rent, but she violated my space, my property and me and just grabbed my belongings and moved everything.
She then threatened me and got upset i was yelling at her for literally stealing my room and literally thinking there was no problem with it
Do I have any legal case or protections agains this entitled psycho??
To note the apartment is month to months so we don’t have a lease with the landlord.
