Son Hit Head In School And Nothing Was Done. Mild Concussion

Yesterday, my son’s substitute teacher informed his father and I at pick up that our son fell while “rough housing” in class, and broke his glasses. My son was visibly upset and distraught. Thinking he was upset because he broke his $400 Oakley glasses, we thanked the teacher for telling us and went into the car. Upon checking him out, I noticed a HUGE lump on the side of his head, by his left temple. This worried me, as I know that’s a sensitive spot. I asked him what actually happened and he told us that he was trying to get away from another student that’s been bothering him, he tripped over another students’ leg or the headphone cables plugged into the computer, and fell. It happened so fast that his reflexes didn’t have a chance to kick in, he fell right on his head and knee. His knee is all types of colors right now. This happened right before lunch, so at 12:30pm. It happened right in front of the teacher, who did nothing to help him. She went on as if nothing happened.

My son then sat through lunch in pain, couldn’t eat and couldn’t see since his glasses broke. Then was forced to sit through another two hours of school with this head trauma before anything was said or done. I immediately marched back into the school to file a report on the school for not having done anything while my son was visibly distraught the last two hours of school. They were condescending and victim blamed my son, saying he should not have rough housed. He was not rough housing. He was getting away from a child that keeps bothering him. They also said, “well your child should have told someone he was hurt because how could we have known?” UHM, it happened right in front of the teacher?! If a child slammed his head into the ground, I would take that as something serious no matter what and who it is.

Anyway the nurse gave him an ice pack, changed the subject to his asthma and eventually told us we can leave. The Assistant Principle said she would write up the report and we’d hear back from her on Monday. We went home and I kept an eye on him. He had a headache and seemed unwell. This morning, he was NOT HIMSELF. So I took him to the ER. Turns out he has a mild concussion.

Isn’t the school supposed to care? Aren’t they supposed to protect our kids? Shouldn’t they have reached out to us the moment it happened?

I guess I’m just venting at this point but I want to know, what would you do if this happened to your child? What should my next steps be?
