Stale Check From 3 Years Ago

Long story short, had a service performed on my property 3 years ago. The business owner had me hand deliver him a check. He gave me a new invoice stating paid in full. If memory serves me right, it took him weeks to cash it. It was particularly annoying because I was trying to balance my accounts as we were in the middle of a fairly large project. He is now calling saying he found out he failed to cash it three years later, I'm trying to get in touch with the bank to try and reverse look up the check to make sure im not getting scammed here. Trying not to be bias as he was extremely rude to my wife and I while working, and was a nightmare to deal with. But I also feel like If this truly is the case it's kind of a him problem at this point. Amount in question is between 1-2k. I live in mi and can't find any info on our stale check laws. Any advice would be helpful.
