Teacher Brought Dog To School And It Bit My Child In The Face (ca)

Card image cap

My kids teacher brought their non-service dog to school and was letting the kids (high school) pet and play with it during class. The dog then bit my kid in the face. It did not break the skin but did leave behind a decent red mark right next to my child’s eye. My child then indicated they would like to go to the nurse and the teacher said “Don’t go to the nurse, I’ll get into trouble. Just go to the locker room and get some ice.” The locker room ended up being closed so the teacher then told my child “I don’t think you should go to the nurse, they’re probably not even there. Just rinse it with some water”. My kid did eventually reach out to us and my husband went to the school to pick her up and take her to see a doctor. He spoke with the principal who really didn’t have much to say besides stating someone from their risk department will be looking into it. I’m just curious if there is any legal action that can be taken or if we should be reaching out to someone in the district about this. I feel my child was very lucky the dog missed doing damage to their eye and want to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

Edit: I’m not necessarily looking to sue, I’m just unfamiliar with this situation and looking to explore all avenues available to me. I want to ensure that my kid and all future kids will be protected from a situation like this from occurring again. I also want to make sure the teacher does not walk away from this with just a slap on the wrist.
