Trust Distribution
Sorry this will be long
In 2018 my great grandmother passed away at the age of 90. Her trust was disputed and after all this time it’s just now getting settled.
At the time the trust had been made I was not born. When she died my sister, cousin, and I were all under the age of 18 and countless people have tried dragging us into the legal battles over the years but our parents remained firm that anything concerning legal matters should go to them. The people in the trust were my grandmother, aunt, sister, and cousin.
Now that my sister, we’ll call her Breanne in place of her actual name, and my cousin, who we’ll call Georgia, are receiving mail about the trust they’re permitted to respond back and such after speaking to parents. Breanne received two letters about the trust saying that she was receiving money that wasn’t to be touched until she was 25. My dad, who wasn’t in the trust, received nothing of the sort. Breanne never responded and I wasn’t mentioned in the letters and had been led to believe I wasn’t receiving anything.
Recently my mother and I met with our grandmother and found out that I am in fact getting money. My grandmother, who we’ll call Susie, was very upset that neither my mother, father, or I had been told about this. Susie is giving up her share, giving me an equal portion to Breanna and Georgia, and the leftovers are being divided equally among us three and my aunt Olivia. She sent my mom and I the emails they exchanged where she outlined her wishes. She claimed how she didn’t trust the attorney, who we’ll call Richard Doom, because he was a friend of my uncle and aunt (not Georgia’s parents, but Susie’s brother and his wife). Mr. Doom never checked up on the trust or it’s money to make sure all was in order so Susie asked him to do so but he claimed that was her job and if it wasn’t done within about six months over $25k of my inheritance would be subsidized. Susie then claimed how her attorney, Angelo Ferrera IV we’ll call him, should have been the one to deal with the trust. She also said she asked him to reach out to me and that the money shouldn’t be inaccessible because it’s for our educations.
My parents and I weren’t aware of all this and my mom doesn’t know what to do.
What actions do you recommend we take?
EDIT: We live in Southern CA, around the LA area if that helps anything
TLDR: Lawyers are withholding trust money and not corresponding correctly, what can be done?
