Tx: Custody Court Hearing

Card image cap

Hi, y;all, My friend has a 1 year-old baby with her ex, both of whom were friends/acquaintances of ours at one point. However, in the last year their relationship has become contentious -- so much so that she moved in with us for a few months because he was consistently drinking, doing coercive stuff, disrupting her transportation so she couldn't work, and so on. In the last year he has made 4 false accusations of endangering their child's welfare 4 times to child protective services, which has found all of them to be unsubstantiated. Meanwhile he is an alcoholic. He doesn't have a consistently-working car, and in my observation has not even managed to come get his child when it was his time to have visitation -- I took the child to him several times, and once my friend actually had to get him an Uber. He's also been intoxicated roughly half the times that I've seen him, including once when he showed up to pick up his child with a questionable child seat (he doesn't own one) in some random dude's car, drunk and both shirtless and shoeless.

So, the latest thing is that he filed in civil court to take full custody and claims she's a danger to their child and can't provide for him and shouldn't even be able to see the child. This is nonsense. However, she works two minimum wage jobs and receives welfare -- she doesn't have funds for a lawyer. What are her options?
