Unfair Cleaning Charges Due To Messy Roommate, Can I Fight This Charge?
To start I will add some clarifications of the situation
- I (18) am a first-year university student in the UK living in student accomodation
- I share a kitchen with 5 other people, however one flatmate has been a problem
- This accommodation is provided by an external company to my institution
- One of the "flat-mates" (for the non english, a roommate) is very unclean, uses illicit substances inside the apartment (sometimes in the shared communal kitchen), and is generally really loud late hours into the night
The current situation
- Upon returning to my apartment after a very long Christmas break, we discovered "TB" had not left over the break between semester 1 & 2
- Not only had he not cleaned up after himself in this duration, he had also left food all over the kitchen - rotting and moulding
- When asked to clean it up, he did so reluctantly but also didn't do a great job and the kitchen is still rather messy
- Since moving in he has continuously produced mess, filth, lots of noise, and has been using substances in our apartment when he knows that the rest of the flatmates are not fond of this
- Our landlord has been quite aggressive within the past week, and has been threatening us with cleaning fees as a result of his mess
- Our landlord has also been made aware that he is using on the premises of the building, and that he is unclean (my other flatmate had sent them that email, I have also made written complaints about TB before to the building management and those seemed to have gotten disregarded)
- I do not believe it is fair for the 5 people (including myself) to be paying for TB's clean up
- Alongside this I have reported TB to the building management for substance use, however have been told that I must go to the police because "they are not the victims" however, this is not what their own email said when they initially emailed about "finding evidence"
Any advice, is it possible I can fight this charge?
