What Are My Options As An Adult Child Of A Father Delinquent On Child Support?

Card image cap

My father never paid child support and my wealthy lawyer grandfather would bury my mother in legal fees anytime she tried to take action against him. My father was also a grifter and had very little of his own money to surrender even if we had won.

Now I'm 32 and it looks like my grandfather may pass away soon, which means my father will be coming into money for the first time in decades and will have fewer resources to protect it. I have documentation from the state of FL that my mother got when I turned 18 stating how much he still owed at the time.

Three questions:

  1. Is there a legal president for adult children seeking reimbursement for missed child support, rather than the parent it was owed to?
  2. Would the fact that none of the parties currently reside in the originating state (FL) cause jurisdictional issues?
  3. If I did seek counsel, what specialty of lawyer would be best to consult? Family?

I've already considered that my grandfather will likely try to protect the funds by placing them in a trust so there may be little I can do, but I figured this post is a nice first step to get me on a path. Thank you!
