What Legally Gives Someone Authority To Create A Professional Certification And Provide Them To People? (florida)
For example, what gives the Florida certification board legal authority to provide various certifications in mental health (such as their certified addictions professional certification)? They are non-profit and not affiliated with any state licensing. They are just an example but my issue isn’t with them.
My issue is with a different entity who provides a similar type of certification. They provided a certification relating to a specific mental disorder to someone. That person is not a therapist. They have a masters degree but they work for themselves as a life coach. They are using the credential at the end of their name and the credential implies they are a certified therapist of a specific disorder. The person doesn’t even have a license to practice therapy in the first place and isn’t working with anybody in their business who does have a license.
So it made me start to wonder what even gave this particular person the legal authority to come up with their own specialized certification program and give it out to other professionals?
Is there some sort of national or state entity that overseas and governs all professional certification programs to make sure they’re legitimate? Can anyone come up with some type of random certification? Is it just like opening up a business and selling a product or is there some sort of official process that you have to go through?
Not sure what to think about it or who I would report it to. I’m not even sure if this is something that I should report or not because I don’t know the context of the rules behind it, legally speaking.
