What Type Of Lawyer Do I Need? +advise Welcome
Throwaway/ New account as my ex knows my main account.
Three months ago I left my ex boyfriend of 5 years and moved across states (Florida to North Carolina). We shared a few animals and when I moved I took one of our cats. I don’t think a lot of details on the breakup is needed but I’ll answer any questions there is it helps, but basically it was pretty messy in the sense that it broke him, lead to him harassing my family, friends, and myself, him self harming, and him making attempts (all documented).
He is now threatening to sue me and press charges to get the cat back. I think it’s all hot air from him* but I want to be ready if it does come down to that. He originally relocated the cat from our joint residence under my nose so I couldn’t take him but he ultimately handed him over to me the day I moved. I am also looking to apply to get a restraining order.
*I think it’s hot air because he said the lawyer he has is the business lawyer that we both hired before for a dispute when we co-owned a business a few years ago. I don’t know if it being a lawyer where I was a client of previously is a conflict of interest? But I feel confident that a business lawyer is not the correct type for this type of conflict.
I also think this is just him trying to continue to get under my skin and hit me where it hurts since this cat is everything to me.
TL;DR- Is there a specific type of lawyer I should look for to assist with potentially being sued over a pet (technically property?) post breakup(no marriage)?
Thank you in advance!
