Workplace Shooting + Toxic Culture
Last week, my workplace experienced a shooting while I was the only one inside. We're a retail store located in a rough part of town on a busy street. The shooter fired through a window, and while the police believe it was likely a BB or pellet gun, it was still a major incident. The large tempered glass 10x10 window shattered almost immediately, and it was 10°F outside. I ended up staying almost two hours after closing until other employees and friends arrived to support me. About three minutes after the window broke, I saw a heavy police presence down the street, and it seems they arrested the suspect(s). Several other businesses also had damaged windows.
It took me a few days to process how dangerous this could have been, and I felt numb for a while. To make things worse, the company has a toxic culture, and I regret returning to work here. I was promised a different position when I came back, but instead, I was forced into a retail associate role. The cherry on top? The owner bought a space heater instead of closing the store for a few days, leaving us to work in a freezing environment. Since then, no one has followed up with me, and I've been reprimanded for trivial matters.
On top of all this, they’ve been editing my time clock and stealing hours from me. I’m not sure what to do about this situation, but I’m angry and don’t want to make any rash decisions. I want to know if I have any recourse through workers’ comp or legal action. I’m just at my breaking point with this company’s treatment of me.
