Discover how savvy cat parents can use ashwagandha to manage stress in cats, backed by research on its effectiveness and safety.

We’ve all seen them: the wide-eyed cats with twitchy tails, hiding behind furniture and meowing excessively. Cat stress takes many forms and often results from changes in their environment or routine. Stress can affect these sensitive creatures in various ways. Whether it’s a move to a new home, a visit to the vet, or simply the arrival of a new family member.  Symptoms of stress in cats can include increased vocalization, inappropriate urination, loss of appetite, aggression, or excessive grooming. However, thanks to a recent study many savvy cat lovers can look forward to an emerging natural remedy and use ashwagandha to manage stress in cats.

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a powerful herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to stress and restore balance. In humans, ashwagandha is known to help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and boost energy levels. But can it be beneficial for cats too?

New research has shed light on the potential benefits of ashwagandha for stress in cats. A recent study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (2024) explores how researchers studied the effects of ashwagandha supplementation on cats experiencing stress.A recent study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (2024) explores the effects of ashwagandha supplementation on cats experiencing stress. The findings suggest that this herb could be a helpful addition to a holistic approach to feline stress management.

What the Study Showed About Ashwagandha’s Effect on Stress in Cats

The study, which used KSM-66 Ashwagandha, aimed to evaluate the impact of ashwagandha supplementation on stress-related behavior in cats. The researchers exposed a group of cats to stressors, such as unfamiliar environments and social interactions, and observed their behavior. They then administered ashwagandha extract over a specified period and monitored the cats’ responses.

Researchers found that the cats who received ashwagandha showed significant reductions in stress-related behaviors. Stress-related behaviors include decreased vocalization, reduced aggression, and a marked improvement in overall mood. The herb appeared to help stabilize the cats’ emotional responses and increase their resilience to stress. Additionally, researchers did not report any significant side effects, suggesting that KSM-66 Ashwagandha is safe for cats when used appropriately.

How Does Ashwagandha Work for Cats?

Ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties help regulate the body’s stress response by balancing cortisol, the primary stress hormone. In cats, chronic stress can lead to a variety of health issues, including digestive problems, urinary tract issues, and a weakened immune system. By helping to regulate cortisol levels, ashwagandha for stress in cats may reduce the long-term physical and behavioral effects of stress.

In addition, ashwagandha is known to have mild sedative properties, which could help calm an anxious cat without making them drowsy or lethargic. This makes it a more natural alternative to prescription medications for stress, which often come with unwanted side effects.

Is Ashwagandha Safe for Cats?

While the study suggests that ashwagandha is generally safe for cats, it’s important to remember that not all supplements are created equal. With 45 quality and safety certifications, manufacturers and veterinary formulators consider KSM-66 Ashwagandha the gold standard. It appears on more than 650 ingredient labels.

Neutral Taste Makes It More Palatable for Cats

While cats are notoriously picky when it comes to nutrition, KSM-66 Ashwagandha’s neutral taste makes it easy to add to food recipes, treats and pet supplements. They’ll never know what made them feel so much better!
